About us

Whimbrel Management Consulting was founded by Dr David King in 2008 to provide information security consulting services and advice to the financial services and other sectors.

Dr David King

Dr David King has over 20 years of experience in security. He is a former Head of Group Information Security at Aviva, and previously was a Vice President and Chief Security Architect at JP Morgan Chase. He has also worked for Cap Gemini and ICL Defence Systems.

David is a founder and the chair of the Information Security Awareness Forum (ISAF). He also participates in a number of industry committees and is joint deputy chair of the ISSA-UK Advisory Board and the EURIM e-Crime Working Group. He has also been involved in UK security standardisation.

Until 2006 David represented JPMorgan, and subsequently Aviva at the International Information Integrity Institute, I-4 (www.i4online.com), and has presented at several I-4 Forums. He was elected to its management committee in 2002 and became its chair in 2003, serving until 2006.

David holds an MBA from London Business School and a PhD in Applied Cryptography. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, a Chartered Engineer and holds the information security certifications CISSP and CISM. He is also a full member of the Institute of Information Security Professionals (M.Inst.ISP).

What is a Whimbrel?

A whimbrel is a wading bird, similar to a curlew but rather smaller, with a curved bill and dark markings on its forehead. (Dr King is also a keen yet occasional birder).
